What Do I Do If I Don’t Have A List?

Help! I Need To Find Good Employees

Here’s a question I was just asked, Dan, I am trying to launch my business, I don’t have a list, I don’t have clients, I don’t have testimonials, I don’t have all these pieces that everyone talks about – how do I get started?

Now, my first answer is that everyone wants an easy answer to a complex problem. And that is not how it works. If it was easy then everyone would do it. Members stay with us for 5, 10, 15 years because they are continuously building more complexity and layers into their businesses. Being with us does MANY things – the toolbox of tactics that this question seems to want me to tell them is only one piece of the puzzle.

Listen closely to the answer I’m sharing, it’s likely not the answer they wanted to hear but is the answer that many need to hear.

The LIST is EVERYTHING. It’s more important than the product. More important than the service, more important than even you. Greatest product in the world is essentially – if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, did a tree actually fall – question.

We need a market, and ideally a business is actually being formed because it is market driven, not just idea driven [February’s Diamond Masterclass is all about this] or preference driven, but market driven. Meaning that there is a starving crowd waiting for it somewhere. Now your question becomes, how do we assemble the crowd?

The list. Either you either create one, oftentimes through a lot of manual labor both in online and offline environments. Getting interviewed on somebody’s podcast or blog, going out and giving free talks every hour at the health food store on Saturdays. That’s building by manual labor.

You can build a list with capital and buy it by advertising. Typically with a very generous, very irresistible free offer as your introduction and your first step of attracting your crowd.

Sometimes you can find it already assembled where somebody else owns it and they are not competitive to you. They may even be complimentary to you. And now their list can be rented or purchased, or it can be a joint venture. You can play parasite to their host and/or there’s an ad media where they are all gathered tightly around your match. All the readers, viewers, or listeners of that media are your perfect prospects that can easily afford the cost of being there.

Some people build lists by scraping websites or having them scraped for them. In most professional categories there are directories.

Through all these mechanisms, you have to list build, you have to organize or step into a market that matches you and what it is that you sell. Ideally the market has suggested what it is that you do or sell, and you need to continually list build at every opportunity and by every means possible!
